Aaaaand this marks the end of Chapter 8!! Phew. Almost can't believe it. I know it was very much like a filler chapter and I was worried that it would turn people off a bit. But I thought it was necessary for the plot's development so it had to be done. But I'm glad so many of you still liked it, even though there was not really that much action and stuff going on. Also, I am now out of the buffer I created during Christmas break so I can't promise more weekly updates for now.

Awesome.
You don't see Nuzlockes with the journey that shows the passing of time, the season is usually just the same kind of springy thing all throughout. You also don't see Nuzlockes with the journey stopping for the family to... just live. That's brilliant.

Also Fearow. Fearows are badass.

Episode 8 felt very like a filler, considering all the feels, action and drama happened in the previous ones. Still I liked this. I was wondering what "excuse" could you have for everybody to continue the journey... and the one you got was amazing.

What I do now is look ahead. In the Pokémon Tower, will the old buddies appear once again?

When did she evolve into Fearow?

Also being a Pokémon Trainer is a journey, an adventure. It's about exploring new lands, discovering yourself, forging alliances and making friends & everything else that makes a journey special to that person.

Which I believe is being achieved here.

One of my fav webcomics atm., the storyline and character development advances well. The artwork is stunning. I'm not that familiar with pokemon besides watching the first two seasons a few times on TV when I was a kid, I have now downloaded an emulator and looking forward to play this stuff, hehe.

I've been following It's a Hard Life for a while now, and I have to say it is a mighty fine comic in every respect - plot, pacing, art, everything.

I like that you focus on the journey and the characters, it makes the violence all the more vivid and unsettling when it does happen.

I love the variety of personalities you have created (my favourite is Cogito <3) and they way they respond to each other.

And I greatly appreciate the massive update dumps. While regular one-at-a-time updates are fine, I really do prefer being able to get a great big chunk of story all at once, even if it means waiting a little bit longer in between(which, by the way, is definitely not an issue with this comic, your schedule is unreal! Major Kudos for that!). So I don't know if it's on purpose or just the way it's worked out, but thanks!

Can't wait to see what happens next :D

You know what I love about this comic?

reply

You don't let the original storyline restrain you whatsoever, which makes it all the more unpredictable.

You use your playthrough of Pokemon as a very basic outline. Heck, I didn't even make the connection that this was a Nazlocke comic until half way through.

That's good writing and presentation.

I also like how you made death a lot more prominent. I mean, hey, the rules say your Pokemon die, so why not everyone else's?

I actually don't recall any other comic having their character actually kill any of the opponent's Pokemon.

This makes the main character a lot more interesting to follow.

REALLY can't wait until the story starts up again. Also, don't worry about having filler. Filler can be a good thing.

Another redditor wanting to express my deep deep love for what you done here. Other people have already talked about the great art, character development and story pacing so you know you got that stuff locked down, I'm not even gona repeat it. My favorite thing about the comic is you have managed to fit in a kinda dark undercurrent into the story (things like pokemon deaths and that story of the ill weedle to sacrificed himself) that juxtaposes so perfectly with the colourful artwork and my own nostalgic pokemon adventures. For real tho this shit is off da hoooooook!!! Keep doin what your doing. Stay bless. X

It's pretty apparent from everybody else's comments... That this comic is just... I don't even know how to describe it. Yeah, all of the elements are awesome, and it's been great to see the progression because I've gotten to just sit down and read them all... But every facet is just really great art. The kind that just sinks right into your soul. I was really shocked at how much this hit me.... I played pokemon as a kid, and loved it, but this just, dang. It's waves of emotion and adventure. And I'm jealous of your growing talent with watercolor.

This is seriously disturbing to read through, no joke... I mean, holy fuck. Elektra. That got me. Elektra was the last thing I read before going to bed a couple of nights ago and it seriously fucked me up. Combined with Surge's backstory about the war—which just made me think about child soldiers in historical and modern conflicts—I couldn't stop thinking about my little sister's reaction to seeing one of her Pokémon faint for the first time: "OH NO CHARMANDER DON'T DIE!!!!!"

Well-done, Qlock. You have ruined my childhood with your edge-of-the-seat thrill of a read. I needed the so-called "filler" of Chapter 8 just so I could sit back and breathe for a few minutes. Can't wait for Chapter 9.

Filler?

reply

I've read many nuzlocks, and enjoy the crap out of them. Some have awesome art, some have minimal art, some have epic narratives, some stick to the game's story.
Among my favorites stand Land-walker's Yellow and Saphire comics, pettyartist's Leaf green comic, and now this one. I was linked to this, today, by a friend, and I spent my morning reading.

Your art style is amazing and compliments your writing style. Your characters are memorable and I have become incredibly attached to them and invested in this story. I can only thank you for this, bravo.

As for calling Chapter 8 filler? Are you kidding? This, this character development, this fleshing out of the world and this... summer adventure, it puts the journey in perspective, adds to the characters and helps build immersion. Chapter 8 was as necessary and beneficial to this comic as any other.

Read this all in a day and I have to say that I am really into the story, but what I've enjoyed the most is watching the coloring and art as a whole improve over the series.

You're doing great things here, keep it up!

Just. Wow.

I came from Reddit and read the entire thing in one sitting just like everyone else. Excellent work. I never played Pokemon (I'm an older gamer) and I'm still enthralled with the story.

Keep it up.

Loved it

Wanted to let you know that I enjoyed every page of this. It was such a great story that also paralleled the gameplay of the original games so perfectly. Would love to see more stuff from you :) Now I got to go find my old Pokémon Blue!

I would pay.

Hi, I'm also from Reddit!

First off, this comic is just magic.

Now I couldn't read it all in one sitting because I had work in the morning. Now I'm at work and have been reading since 08:30, its 11:00 now and I'm reading it again just for the heck of it.

Oh and this.. if you would print these I would pay good money, just letting you know.

Keep up the great work!

Just wanted to tell you that your comic is great and I really liked chapter 8 simply for the down time the characters have to enjoy each other.

this chapter has made me wish that there was some sort of Pokemon wilderness survival simulation game. I want to have my pokemon help me build a camp, gather food, fend off wild pokemon, etc. :o

I don't think I've ever seen a bird in fiction come off as sultry as right now.

Also, this interpretation of a Fearow really makes you think of the connection between dinosaurs and birds.
