Oookay. I know I'm not the best at keeping in touch with my readers. In fact, I'm absolutely horrible at it. But I must pull myself together now. The last update took so long partly because of a series of unfortunate events - the scanner at school broke down, my computer broke down, moved house and there was something wrong with the telephone line so it took ages before we had any internet. But I have to be honest with you. Usually when I've not updated for a long time (any old-time readers should know this is not a new thing) I would have a buffer for a while but ... that is not the case now. Thing is I have really struggled to gather motivation to work on this comic lately, and I've barely even touched it since October (or maybe even September, I don't remember).

For me personally, it's not all bad though. You see, I love comics and I love making them and I've been doing it since I was 9 years old. But when I first started It's a Hard Life back in 2011, I had, for about a year, struggled and failed to create an original comic and I was half convinced I was just not cut out for it. So I thought, well, a silly little pokemon thing, why not?? I never intended for it to become so serious (or have so many readers, it astonishes me ever day). It still is very much doodles and little planning. Anyway. It was later that year I developed depression. And as you may know it's hard to keep any interest in anything when you've managed to convince yourself that you're entirely worthless as an artist, storyteller and general human being. Anyway, It's a Hard Life was never serious so I could work on it without pressure and it was often a good way too keep myself occupied. I should also thank all my readers for the positive feedback, if it weren't for all that, I probably would have stopped and deleted the whole thing from the face of the earth at some point.

ANYWAY. The point of this rant is that, over the last year I have finally recovered from that mess. Somewhat. It's winter times now and winter times are always the worst. But the thing is, since I'm in better health these days I've been able to re-discover some of that interest in comics and, through some support from friends, I've gathered up enough confidence to start my original comic. This is also my current illustration project at university and I'm actually quite excited about it (which is a nice feeling I almost forgot what it was like). I'm spending a lot of time working on it which leaves me with little energy or motivation for It's a Hard Life.

However I DO NOT want to cancel It's a Hard Life. Not yet at least. Especially considering where the story is at the moment, that would just be cruel. But I guess it will be some sort of hiatus. Or at least even less frequent updates. I know it's not nice to hear and I am very sorry for this. I feel like I owe both you and the story itself to be concluded. But I can't deny myself doing what I actually want to do - which is my original thing. I'm putting a lot more effort into it, for once, and have a start and a finish. After that's done, maybe we'll see. But basically, the future of It's a Hard Life is uncertain, but I don't want to leave it as it is. I'm not making any promises that I can't keep. We'll just have to see. Again. Thank you all for your patience, support and for reading this silly little comic. It has definitely helped me to feel that, maybe, just maaaybe, I could actually make comics.

Are you using your depression as inspiration for Kato's current state? Or is it just an unfortunate coincidence?

Take as much time as you need on updates. I'll be here waiting happily for you to return from hiatus. In the meantime, it would be awesome to read your original work as well! You are such a talented story-weaver and your art isn't too shabby either. If it's possible to provide us a link to that, awesome. Although I totally understand if it's too incomplete to do so or if you plan on print publishing it someday and cannot post it to the internet.

I've never struggled with depression myself, but I have many, many friends who have/do. I can understand the struggle from an outside perspective, even if I can't empathize properly. I wish you the best and pray you have a circle of good supporting people in your life (which is sounds like you do).

Quick question, will the new comic be hosted on SJ? It'll be much easier to keep us here for those who already read It's a Hard Life.

Anyway, good for you on being able to pull through! I know from firsthand and secondhand experience that it can be very hard to do that, especially when you lose the motivation to get better. Do whatever you want or need to, and we'll support you as best we can.

@GoldenJoe: Most people who do fanfics don't do them because they anticipate getting really lucky and having a huge fan-base. If that could be reasonably expected, fanfics wouldn't be written spontaneously. I know a few stories that are absolutely amazing, but hardly get any views. Conversely, I know plenty that aren't worth spit that seem to get insanely popular for reasons I'll never understand. It's a crapshoot. If the author gets bored or burned out...not much can be done. It's easier to get tired of fanfics than it is of original work, because you aren't limited by the source material.

Hah. I started my comic adventures doing the same thing you are. Making new stories out of existing franchises. Started with Hellsing, moved on to Bleach...my Bleach comic got fairly popular (though not nearly as popular as yours.) I lost interest in it almost overnight at one point. Dropped the Bleach thing like a bad habit. Started my Eidolon story and haven't looked back, even though barely 8% of my old readers moved on to the new story.

You have to do what you like. Don't kill yourself to update IAHL if you'd rather do something else. Sometimes, one project is just a stepping stone to another.

I would love to say something smart or awesome, but words usually fail me. Most people already voiced what I thought, and I actually understand what you're going through. I used to be depressed, and I also know the feeling when motivation swipes to something different.

I follow you since around... two years ago? I forgot. You were halfway chapter 7. And everytime this comic updates I feel happy. The only thing I wish to ask, if I was in position, is precisely what you mentioned you don't want to do. Don't leave this comic. Update it less if you want, but don't toss away this awesome project.

A last question. Would you be okay if somebody grabbed all the comic and made it into PDFs in case anything happens?

What I mean is, this comic is really good, and the simple fact that you managed to carry it so far and for so long speak volumes of you passion and determination for art. As long as you have those, everything else is completely unimportant. Writing or drawing skills can be acquired through practice, passion cannot, no matter how demanding you can be of yourself.

Hi, I read you're comment and just wanted to say that while you may feel like you're going through depression and that before this you couldn't write anything original that I was going through the near exact same thing. I felt like I couldn't write anything worthwhile and loathed myself for it. I tried writing a Nuzlocke but felt I wasn't even capable of that. However, you're comic is the thing that gave me the guts to write despite feeling miserable. Not only is it still the best Nuzlocke story I've ever had the pleasure of reading, bordering on being an actual masterpiece in fact, but I even sort of took note from what you did. I genuinely liked how you're Pokemon were so interesting and well-developed, how the story felt so exciting and fun and actually worked it into my Nuzlocke. Because of writing it, I now have so many ideas for stories that I don't even have time to write them all at once. So thanks for writing this.

Thanks for updating, Qlock!

You have done a fantastic job with It's a Hard Life and should be proud. However it isn't going anywhere and sometimes you have to focus on other things - this is natural for any creator.

I know I have this as a pinned tab on my browser along with a select few other webcomics and I will continue to check in to see how it and you are doing, you take your time.

This story is yours to tell, we're just lucky enough to get to share it with you. I can't wait to see how it ends one day. :)

I'll keep waiting for this. However long it takes.

If the day does come though, and this comic gets canceled, is there a chance you could just release your notes or something? Just how the gameplay went showing who died in the end. I feel like that would take little to no effort and while it wouldn't be complete closure, it would be something.

Only if the day comes though. I'll wait however long it takes to get a real ending to the comic.

Life is hard

reply

Dear Author, I'm writing to you from Brazil, where - you probably know - you've also got passionate readers.

I'll try not to write a lot (since I imagine you have lots of other things to do), but it's fairly difficult to me explaining in just a few words how nice it has been to follow your comic since I read it for the first time.

Nowadays, it's like an addiction or something. Everytime I log on to the internet I immediately check your page to see if there's an update of some sort, and no matter how many times the answer is no, I keep clicking - sometimes three or four times in the same day - because when the answer is yes, my day is always somehow special.

Your story is fun, clever, touching and your characters are so well-developed that sometimes I can see a soul in their eyes. As an arts student, I find amazing how your art and your colors can turn something that would be simple into something incredibly deep. It's like a vortex to perception, you just can't escape! And no matter what, it's always possible to feel that you put a lot of yourself in every page.

You know... I would like to one day be able to do what you've done – really publishing something, I mean. You and your hard work are true inspiration to me and well... This is where being me becomes difficult at this moment:

The thing is... I love It's a Hard Life, but I also always knew that somebody as talented and determined as you wouldn't stick to this project forever since you would eventually come up with a project of your own.

As a fan, I'm already sad because I foresee a lot of clicks with no good news for a while in the future, but as an artist, I couldn't be happier for you because I can imagine how important of a step an original project really is and how great it could be for you.

Now, as a fan and an author wannabe, what I have to tell you is: go for it. You have everything necessary to make a living out of your art. Give it as much love and hard work as you've given to It's a Hard Life to your original projects and whatever they are, they're definitely going to be a hit! And if you ever publish it anywhere, please let us know! I would definitely give up some Magic the Gathering cards' money to buy something by you!

Regarding It's a Hard Life, well... Take your time. Whether you decide to continue or to give up on it, I'll still be clicking everyday for as long as there's a website to check.

When I started reading It's a Hard Life, I was going through depression myself, and somehow, your dark, gory, atrocious and yet beautiful comic made me feel happy. It's a story that I'll never forget.

Life is hard, but between everyday battles, It's a Hard Life always makes it incredibly fun!

Thank you!

Ah, and happy New Year, by the way ;)

Well, i've read all of this in one night. It's amazing. Incredible. Any positive adjective, really. I see little to no flaws in it - at least nothing that bothers me or comes across as inherently "bad." I'm disappointed that it will be a while before there's more, but knowing how great it will be certainly makes it worth it. It's extremely rare for me to find anything to read that i'm interested in, but this is definitely something. The story, the characters, the art - it's all perfect. Thank you, so much, for all of it. Listen, I'm not exactly experienced with the adult world, but I do understand that it must cause immense pressure for many. You don't owe us anything. Like you said, this was made as a fun little thing, so you doing this isn't anything you owe us. There is no pressure whatsoever. If it stops, it stops. We'll miss it, but we'll understand.

I'm not going to feign empathy with you, because you have no idea how much that pisses ME off when someone does that to me. However, you do have my support. By no means are you alone! I have been reading since Giovanni's last meeting with Zager's ex-owners, so I know what the hiatuses are like. And I'm also responsible for these, but instead with the poor excuse of being lazy.

On another note, this has been a very delightful little update. Cogito being hard on Puck is practically normal at this point, and I feel that she's going to have to step up as leader one point or another. I would say Bimm, but we don't really know much about her at all, whereas Cogito has had a whole chapter of development dedicated to her. I look forward to future updates, regardless of how long they take.

Sincerely,
just one of your many amazing fans.

Dido to all the above.^^^ God dang there are a lot of comments! I hope you won't mind if I sneak one more in ^w^
Personally, I've been following this story for years, ever since my Freshman year at college, and it's been a blast. Even the waiting is fun since it lets the previous chapters of freakin' epicness sink in to our inferior cerebrums. It's like a finely aged wine in that regard, it only gets better with time! ;P

Anyways, I'm no stranger to unfinished stories. In fact, it's kind of REALLY amazing that you feel so obligated to finish it! Most people at this point would have quit or patched together some crumbly ending long ago, just to appease the readers, instead of persevering in something that they obviously put a lot of effort into creating! It's nothing short of amazing!

In fact you're exactly like that one creator of one-punch man! A guy who is only a "mangaka for fun", not working for proceeds or a strict update schedule.
And even if you decide not to finish the story, it's been a complete delight reading this. And I know I'm not the only person who thinks so too :DD

I write stories of my own, and most of them I just come up with ideas for, then leave in limbo for all of eternity, despite endless want to work on them. I have over a dozen stories in hiatus, many of which I wish could be comics; would be a better fit than plain text.
I actually admire you for actually coming up a story, even one as simple as nuzlocke, and actually going through with creating it and putting it out there for everyone to judge. Not only that, you're a hell of a better artist than I'll ever be. As I always say: If you can stick figures, you can draw better than me XD
So don't be down, be proud that you can not only put out a quirky little comic, but make over 500 pages for that comic and amass dozens of fans who love your work :)

@Qlock: Your fooling yourself into thinking your a crap artist or storywriter. I think this comic is a testament to your skill and talent as an artist, cause if you really made this with just a lot of doodles and little planning, then I shudder to think what you can make with all of your effort put into something else.

Put your school first and give it your all, use Hard Life as a casual experience to relieve stress. Don't worry about us so much, if you don't want to draw Hard Life for a while, then just leave us a message letting us know and so we know your alive(those sudden Hiatus' are bad for my heart ;). If its too much of a pain to keep up, then drop it, but if you decide to keep doing it, your loyal fans will wait for you.

Keep up the good work!!

@Qlock: Facing depression isn't easy and I admire you for it, I think this comic is wonderful and I would be very sad if you gave up on it. I have no problem waiting for your updates because for me it is worth the wait. The story is beautiful and very emotionally honest.
Good luck!

By the way, this silly little comic is genuine proof that you can indeed make comics, and that you're good at it. :)

Dont worry about this comic too much and dont worry about taking ages to update it. You started this in 2011 and still have this many readers, even after that long pause for this update to even come out. We'll still be here waiting for the next one! Good luck with your new thing :)

This comic is honestly the best webcomic I've read in years, and I read plenty of webcomics. It made me cry, it made me smile, it's so full of complex human (and Pokemon) feelings. I love it immensely, and I'm happy to wait as long as we have to wait for you to be ready to bring some resolution to it.
In the meantime, it's awesome that you found a new project that makes you feel good! Keep doing that, can't wait to read it!

Dude. I've been reading It's a hard life for two years now and I must say it is one the best things I have ever read. Your style is beautiful, although this is not a major factor to me, what I like the most about your story is the sensibility in it and the empathy that emerges form it. Like what Cogito said in recent pages "you cannot help someone that doesn't to be helped". These are real life lessons and it is wonderful to be able to spread that to people through art. I wish you the best and really hope you keep on with It's a Hard Life and if you doens

@Qlock: What a beautiful and wonderful ride this has been! It's so incredible, every single time I re-read this, to see how far you've come as an artist and a writer. The balance of humour and horror, the creative take on incorporating in-game events to a realistic world and the relationship-building between pokemon had me hooked by the end of King Rat.

Jojjo is my favourite graphic novel character ever - her badassery and beautiful mindset made me adore Beedrill, despite its weaknesses. Losing her was absolutely heartbreaking, after she'd been the rock of the team for so long.

This was the first nuzlocke comic I read and I think it's still the best nuzlocke story I've encountered. You inspired me to take on the challenge myself and to use it as fuel for my own creative writing, and I'd be over the moon to even come close to replicating the raw emotion you've instilled in us readers. I'm so excited for you that you're putting this awesome talent to work for you with your original comic. I'm so happy for you every time you update, it sounds like so many things are looking up for you and that is absolutely wonderful to hear.

Also, I know you don't accept gifts and have no plans to sell this. But this has gotten so damn good, I might just end up screenshotting all 500+ pages one day and printing them for myself, to make sure I never lose a single chapter or forget a single character. So that every glorious comeback, every tragic defeat and every stunningly scenic monologue/voiceover is there, in my home, for me, for my friends, and one day for my kids to fall in love with all over again.

With all the best wishes for you, for It's a Hard Life and for There Will Always Be Dragons,
