Well, I guess it's time to get this started. Pages will come next week, as I'm trying to create a bit of a buffer (for the first time ever I don't actually have some 50+ pages lying around waiting for colour).

Some less fun news though. Not relevant right now, but I feel like it's only fair to give you a heads up. And I did mention it in an earlier comment but I was a bit vague and hadn't completely made up my mind yet.

I know some of you will probably be disappointed - and for that I am truly sorry. But I will most likely end this comic after this arc. I suppose it shouldn't come to too much of a surprise considering the irregular update schedule - but that's what happens when the artist lose all inspiration and most of their motivation. Honestly - if it wasn't for you readers I would have ended it a long time ago. I want to give the comic (and you) a somewhat satisfying conclusion, but I know it will be impossible for me to force myself to draw it the very 'end'. It would take years and my lack of inspiration would hurt the quality of the comic itself - both art and writing wise (I am honestly feeling this happening right now). Now, the last thing anyone wants is a story becoming an uninspired drag that just keeps going with no soul or thought whatsoever.

But I have had this arc planned out for years and I know what to draw so I feel like I could make it work well enough. Things are gonna go down and things will be tied up enough for, what I consider, an all right ending. Again, I am sorry. But I have been considering this for a long time and I know it will be the best thing to do, both for me and the comic. Also, this arc isn't gonna end any day soon. Maybe in a year or so, if I work hard enough.

Again, thanks for sticking by and leaving comments and the like – wouldn't have come this far without you.

It's been a privilege to read this; thanks so much for sharing it with us. Much better to end on a high note (if the term is applicable in Nuzlockes) than to crawl on unto death. Looking forward to whatever comes next!

I'm assuming that your plan for this arc concluding the comic doesn't exactly follow how things played out in your actual playthrough?

Would there maybe be a chance of you just releasing your notes after it's all said and done? Just maybe showing who died in the game and how/when they died? I completely respect your decision as a writer and artist, and I'm so grateful you've given us this much for so long.

But I would really be interested in seeing how things WERE going to play out at some point. If you'd be okay with sharing that with us, maybe.

@Guest: Yes, some other people have asked about this, so I'll probably put together a sort of 'what happened afterwards' for those who're interested in what happened in-game.

Everything that's gonna happen in this arc is however, perfectly matches what happened in game.

@Qlock: It's truly a shame that this will be the last we see of this comic. However, nobody should be complaining. You've given us THE nuzlocke. You've pushed through so much for our sake even when you felt like shit. You've given us amazing characters that we all care about. The embodiment of the the entire idea of a nuzlocke in my opinion is to appreciate your team, and I've never cared so much about fictional characters anywhere else. If this ends up being the conclusion, it better damn well be a good one. To conclude a nuzlocke properly without showing the entire journey is something I've never seen before, but I'm welcoming it. Especially if it's from you. I'd be interested to see what really happens in game for you, maybe as a final note to end things off? Draw a few more pieces for us depicting the fate of each character? I'm asking for a little much perhaps, but I think we'd all appreciate that very much.

I'll admit, I was really stubborn about reading "There Will Always Be Dragons" because I just loved this so much that I couldn't accept the fact you were working on something else. But that was simply immature of me. I want to see you succeed in everything you do in the future, and I will follow you all the way.

Zager seems to be fairly prominent on the cover. I've been enjoying his character very much. Although I still have a grudge against Pluto, Zager's compassion was truly touching. I'm pretty excited to see what they can do. Kato's development has been fucking amazing, and if there were a poll held, he'd probably be the fan favourite next to Jojo for just being an awesome character. Puck has been with us since the beginning. If he dies before he evolves it'd be heartbreaking. Bimm has just been such a pleasant and graceful party animal, and I love that she's doing her best to take on the motherly figure this time around. And then there's Cogito. Has there been a more badass nuzlocke character ANYWHERE!? Her previous vendetta against humans is executed so god damned well, her development had an entire CHAPTER dedicated to it, and she has been my favourite since she joined the team. Her sassy personality developing into utter seriousness, her evolution, CHAPTER FUCKING 9! Will never forget her in particular.

We miss you, Robin! What a character! She's done so many questionable things, yet I still can't help but wish for her safety! She's made me feel so conflicted about the whole situation, and I really want to see her happy. She might or might not deserve it, but she's a kid who's been forced into a shitty situation by shitty people.

Again, thank you so much for all of this! I knew this would be my favourite!

I'm definitely sad to hear the comic will be ending earlier than originally planned, but I'm glad to hear it's going to get some official form of closure. I can honestly say as someone that hasn't even played a Pokemon game that this has been an amazing ride. You're a very talented writer and have this way of making you care about every character in your stories. I'm looking forward to what comes in the conclusion and will definitely keep following your other works as well (I really like There Will Always Be Dragons by the way).

reply

Man, am I going to miss checking this comic for updates a few times a week! I'm so glad you took the enormous time and effort to bring us this awesome story. It still remains one of my top 3 favorite comics, ever. I'm honestly glad that you see the right time to put it down, instead of dragging it like a dead horse. Too many great things have been ruined that way, and I'm glad you're not forcing it. I can't say I'm not disappointed, but don't be sorry. You really can't force things like this, and you've done an incredible amount of work to build this! Again, I can't thank you enough for sharing this story with us! If you ever feel compelled to print it (legal issues pertaining), my wallet is waiting! I can't wait to see how it ends!

I discovered this comic in August, and I really like it. I like the characters, supporting each other during hardships, I like the brutality found in some parts of the comic, I even like Cogito questioning Robin and Puck for doing what me and many others have done playing pokemon games, Nuzlocke or not.

I really liked how you changed things from the game to make the story more interesting, such as Mr. Fuji actually being reverend Fuji and dying to calm down Cubone's mother.

Anyway, I really enjoyed this comic, and will carry on enjoyong it as you finish it. So thank you for making this great comic, and end it when you feel like it so that the quality stays excellent. Please, show us your notes on the gameplay after you end the comic though, because I'd be interested to know how the run ended.

On a side note, I've read the FAQs. Professor Oak is Robin's father, isn't he?

I'll admit that after almost 5 years of checking for updates, knowing that it's ending comes as a shock, but I really appreciate your idea of ending it while it's good, not allowing it to drag and become boring(like what happens to most famous manga) caring for both the comic and the readers.
Thanks for all the hard work and I'll make sure to keep checking for those next updates

This was a wonderful experience

reply

At first I was a bit disappointed that this will be a final arc...

But then I realized: This comic doesn´t need to drag all the way to Elite Four and stuff like that because those things are not even a part of a story. Many of endgame and post-game stuff did not play a major role in this comic, so this is a perfect moment to wrap it up with the cast and plot that we know.
This was never a tale about being the very best, but about friendship, trust, respect and survival in harsh conditions as the story title implies.

And you know what: I think that the battle at Silph Co. in Saffron will be a perfect climactic finale for this story. In the actual game, Silph Co. and the whole Saffron was one of the complete highlights for me and the most climactic moment; It made Cinnabar and return to Viridian look like a relaxing post-game in comparison to it.

I know that you have probably decided how to finish up the story and there is nothing we can do to influence it, but damn, I´m really desperately hoping for a happy ending and that nobody else dies, especially not Puck, because I don´t think that poor Robin will be able to cope with that. Skott, Regina, Nickan, Jojjo, Swann and many many more; all of them have died right in front of her eyes and I don´t think that she will be able to handle one more loss, especially not the loss of her beloved starter. Kato´s breakdown was a perfect example of how you react when you lose someone that you hold so dear.

Finally, I wonder how will everything play out. Giovanni is the main villain obviously, but what about Gary? Pluto will obviously come back and help. However, I wonder if Zager is truly loyal to the team (because I still remember that scene where Giovanni told him that he could potentially train him if he gets stronger). I wonder if he would actually turn against his fellow teammates if they started losing against Giovanni? Can´t wait to see!

Overall, Qlock, I have to thank you for this wonderful series. Take your time slowly and give it justice the best way you can. We will be cheering you on!

And as they say: "Don´t be sad because its over, be glad that it happened!" :)

All alone, or in twos
The ones who really love you
Walk up and down outside the wall
Some hand in hand
Some gathering together in bands
The bleeding hearts and the artists
Make their stand
And when they've given you their all
Some stagger and fall after all it's not easy
banging your heart against some mad buggers
Wall

QLOCK: I know this isn't quite the end, but I will say this now. You have given 6 years of the best Pokemon comic I have ever seen. The storyline was excellent, the artwork was beautiful, and I enjoyed every panel of every page.

To me, the standout of your comic was your focus on the Pokemon, not the people. Your choice to give the Pokemon voices created this wonderful world different from everyone else. For a story to truly work, you need to make a connection with the characters, to feel for them. I did that. I felt the pain of Kato, the anger of Cogito, and the strength of Bimm. What you have achieved is amazing. You should be incredibly proud.

I have enjoyed both It's a hard life and There will always be dragons, and I look forward to hopefully seeing more of your artwork in the future.

But for now, I will enjoy the countdown to the end, to discover the fates of the characters that will stay in my heart forever.
